Treatments
We almost always recommend aeration as the first step for improving and maintaining water quality in a pond, dugout or lake. If aeration alone doesn’t get you all the way to your water quality goals, you can supplement it with biological and or chemical treatment.

Aquatic Dye
This is one of the most cost-effective additions for your pond. Available in several colours, BRANDTTM Super Strength Colourant is made from food safe ingredients so it will not harm any people or animals. By blocking sunlight penetration into the water column aquatic dye can significantly reduce weed and algae growth. Important: reducing photosynthesis can drastically reduce oxygen levels so we do not recommend using this product without aeration.
Bioaugmentation
Cultured strains of beneficial bacteria, biocatalysts and micronutrients can help manage nutrients, degrade muck and encourage flocculation. This leads to less algae blooms, clearer water and a more balanced aquatic ecosystem. Smoky Trout Farm only the NaturaLake line of bioaugmentation products. Theses industry leading products are made with strains of bacteria that deemed safe on Health Canada’s Domestic Substances List. While these products can be used without aeration they are far more effective with good oxygen levels. They will temporarily increase the oxygen demand in a pond, so we do not recommend using them without aeration in fish-bearing waters. PondZilla Pro is a formulation of natural enzymes that improves penetration of other treatment products. It improves the effectiveness of algaecides and herbicides, reducing the dosage rates of these chemicals. It also speeds up the degradation of dead algae and plants. Download the information sheet.
Phosphorous Binder
Bioaugmentation products can effectively reduce nitrogen nutrients (ammonia, nitrite & nitrate) but can only temporarily bind phosphorous. To strip phosphorous from the water column and permanently bind it in the sediments we recommend using an aluminum-based flocculant.
Floc N Lock is safe to use in all ponds and does not affect pH levels. It can be sprayed over the surface or poured in over a running aeration diffuser. When it mixes with the water it will form a cloud-like “floc” that will permanently bind to phosphorus and pull it to the bottom. Floc N Lock will also create a barrier over the sediments that will prevent the release of phosphorous contained in the sediments.
Algaecides
Even with aeration and the
above treatments, almost all waterbodies will still experience some algae growth, especially in the shallow areas around the edge. If this is more algae than you want, you will need to turn to occasional treatment a copper-based algaecide.
